- My short story California Dreaming is finally up… | My Writing Woes - […] http://visibilityfiction.com/california-dreaming-by-gil-segev/ […]
Firstly – I’m so excited the first of the teen writers is up! Hip Hooray!
Secondly – I really enjoyed reading this. The plot was the right size for the length, the characters were well drawn, the tension and fears of leaving home and security behind for the first time (even knowing it’s there to run back to) at the heart of the narrative real and relatable.
Just one note. While I know the huge risk Finn is taking for love is the core of this story, I, personally, just couldn’t quite believe someone would move countries for someone they’d never met – and it drew me out of the story a bit. I don’t know what the solution is – because Finn having visited Jason previously, or also moving for study or to follow a professional dream, would have weakened the fear that drove the introspection. But something to keep in mind. And that might just me being unromantic and risk adverse.
Haha! Kara! Thanks for your comment. YES YOU ARE BEING TOTALLY UNROMANTIC! People do this sort of thing all the time. 😛
